The HP 901 tri-colour ink cartridge is the genuine Original HP colour replacement, part number CC656AE, for the HP OfficeJet 4500 and J4500 series. Cyan, magenta and yellow sit in one unit. It pairs with the HP 901 black, and these machines generally will not print with only one cartridge installed.

One thing worth knowing: the tri-colour yields considerably more than the black on this model — about 360 pages against 200. That means you will typically replace two blacks for every colour, so stocking a spare black makes more sense than stocking a spare of each.

Getting the most from this cartridge
- Fit it straight from the foil and take the tape off the nozzles, not the contacts.
- All three colours share one body; when any single colour runs out the whole cartridge is spent and must be replaced.
- Print in colour at least every two weeks — even if most of your work is black, a colour cartridge left idle in the machine will clog, and the remaining ink cannot be recovered.
- 360 pages assumes 5% coverage; photographs and solid colour areas use it faster.
