Genuine or compatible?
Genuine, Original HP in the sealed box. Not a refill and not our Royal house brand, which is always sold as Royal. Two things worth knowing here. First, HP sells this same cartridge as 59A in this region and as 58A in North America, so a cheaper 58A listing abroad is the same cartridge in a different box. Second, this generation checks the cartridge chip in firmware and non-genuine cartridges on the M404 and M428 are among the most commonly rejected of any HP range. A cartridge the printer refuses is not a saving at any price.

Getting the most from this cartridge
- Rock the cartridge gently side to side before fitting and pull the sealing tab out fully.
- Do not touch the chip on the side of the cartridge. On this generation a dirty or damaged chip is the usual cause of a not-genuine message on a perfectly good cartridge.
- If you print more than a ream a month, HP 59X holds substantially more in the same slot and costs less per page.
- 3,000 pages assumes 5% coverage. Invoices with heavy rules and dark headers will come in under that.
