Genuine or compatible?
Genuine, Original HP in the sealed box. Not a refill and not our Royal house brand, which is always sold under the Royal name. These are older machines now, and older machines attract remanufactured and counterfeit toner. The signs are streaking, background shading and toner that does not fuse properly onto the page. Getting the most from this cartridge
- Rock the cartridge gently end to end before fitting, then pull the sealing strip out in one steady movement.
- Never touch the drum surface or leave the cartridge out in bright light while you install it.
- Black is used on almost every page, so it empties well before the colours. Buying black on its own rather than as a set is usually the cheaper approach.
- 3,500 pages assumes 5% coverage. Reports with shaded tables, logos or dark headers will fall short of that.

- Is there a higher-yield version? No. HP sells 304A as a standard-capacity cartridge for this series.
- Do I need the colours too? Yes for colour printing. HP 304A cyan CC531A, magenta CC533A and yellow CC532A are sold separately at around 2,800 pages each.
