Genuine or compatible?
Compatible, and not HP. HP's only reload-style product is the sealed Neverstop kit for its cartridge-free printers, which is a different thing entirely. Loose refill powder is a generic consumable made by third parties. It is legitimate and it has its uses, but you should know exactly what you are buying.

Getting the most from this cartridge
- Refilling works best on older chipless cartridges such as the HP 12A. Newer cartridges carry a chip that counts pages, and refilling does not reset it, so the printer may still report empty.
- The drum wears out whether the cartridge is refilled or not. A cartridge refilled three or four times will streak because the drum is finished, not because the toner is bad.
- Refill in a ventilated space, away from documents and equipment. Toner powder is fine enough to travel and does not brush off cleanly.
- If a machine is central to your work, weigh the saving carefully. A leaking cartridge can put toner through the printer, and that repair costs more than the cartridge you saved on.
