Description
The Eaton 5E 850VA is a line-interactive UPS rated at 850VA / 480W, built to keep a workstation, network cabinet or point-of-sale setup running through a blackout and to smooth out the voltage swings in between. Line-interactive is a step above the basic standby design: it corrects mains voltage continuously through automatic voltage regulation rather than jumping to battery every time the supply dips, which means less wear on the battery and a longer service life.
What it works with
At 480 watts of real output, it comfortably covers a desktop computer with a monitor, or a network cabinet holding a router, switch and small server, or a shop counter running a POS terminal and receipt printer. Four outlets let you protect a whole desk from one unit.
Read this before you buy. The 5E 850VA uses IEC C13 outlets — the rectangular "kettle lead" type — not standard three-pin wall sockets. Desktop computers, monitors and most network equipment already use IEC leads, so they plug straight in. Anything with a moulded UK three-pin plug will not, and you will need IEC adapters, which we stock. People discover this at the desk rather than in the shop, so we would rather tell you now. Some regional variants ship with Schuko or universal outlets instead — send us your requirement and we will confirm which variant we have before you pay.
As with any UPS this size, do not connect a laser printer.

Who this is for
Offices protecting a workstation or a network cabinet, shops protecting a till, and anyone who has decided that the cost of a UPS is smaller than the cost of losing an afternoon's work. The three-year warranty on electronics is unusually good in this class and worth weighing against cheaper units.

Getting the most from this UPS
Charge it fully before you rely on it. On USB variants, install Eaton UPS Companion — it will shut your computer down safely if the battery runs low while you are away from the desk, which is the whole point of owning one. Do not plug the UPS into an extension lead; run it from a wall socket directly. Keep it off the floor in dusty rooms and away from direct sun. Test it deliberately every few months by pulling the wall plug with something harmless connected — a battery that has quietly died is worse than no UPS at all, because you were counting on it.
Frequently asked questions
- What kind of plugs does it take? IEC C13 outlets on the standard model — the same connector your desktop and monitor cables already use. Three-pin equipment needs an adapter.
- How long will it run my computer? That depends on the load. A desktop and monitor drawing around 200W will get several minutes — enough to save and shut down safely.
- What is the warranty? Three years on electronics and two years on the battery as standard from Eaton.
- Is it better than a cheaper standby UPS? For most offices, yes. Line-interactive design corrects voltage without draining the battery, so the battery lasts longer.
- Do you deliver outside Nairobi? Yes — Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa and countrywide.
