Description

The APC Back-UPS 650VA is the entry-level battery backup most Kenyan offices start with — a 650VA / 325W unit that keeps a desktop computer, monitor and router alive long enough to save your work and shut down properly when the power goes. It is built for the reality of an unstable grid: as well as holding power during a blackout, it corrects the sags and spikes that quietly damage equipment between outages.

What it works with

Rated at 325 watts of real output, this unit is sized for one desktop workstation and its peripherals, not a room full of them. In practice that means a desktop PC plus a monitor, or a router, switch and small NAS, or a single point-of-sale terminal with its receipt printer. APC rates roughly 17 minutes of runtime at a 100W load — enough for a fibre router and ONT to ride out a short outage, or for a desktop user to finish a sentence and shut down cleanly.

It will not run a laser printer. Laser printers draw a very large current spike when the fuser heats, and connecting one to a UPS of this size will trip it or shorten the battery's life sharply. Plug printers into the wall or into a surge-only outlet.

If you are not sure whether your setup fits, send us the wattage from the label on the back of your equipment and we will confirm before you pay.

Who this is for

Small offices, home workers and shopkeepers who have lost work to a blackout once and do not want it to happen again. It is the cheapest honest way to protect a single machine. If you need to keep a whole counter or several workstations running, you want a 1000VA class unit or larger — talk to us rather than buying two of these.

Getting the most from this UPS

Leave it charging for a full day before you rely on it — a UPS out of the box is not a UPS with a full battery. Never plug a UPS into an extension cable or another surge protector; run it straight from a wall socket. Expect the internal battery to last roughly three to five years in Kenyan conditions, sooner in hot or dusty rooms, and treat frequent beeping under normal mains as a sign the battery is going rather than a fault in the unit. Every few months, unplug it from the wall on purpose with something harmless connected — that is the only way to know it still holds charge before you need it to.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will it run my desktop and monitor? Yes, comfortably within the 325W rating — a typical office desktop and 22-inch monitor sits well under it.
  • Can I plug in a printer? Not a laser printer. An inkjet is usually fine, but keep lasers on the wall socket.
  • How long will it last during a blackout? Around 17 minutes at 100W. Heavier loads drain it faster — it is designed to let you shut down safely, not to work through a long outage.
  • Does it protect against surges too? Yes. It includes surge protection and automatic voltage regulation, which steps low and high mains voltage back toward normal without draining the battery.
  • Do you deliver outside Nairobi? Yes — Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa and elsewhere in Kenya.
